Hanne Bertelsen Keramik

UI Design

2024

Overview

In 2019, as part of the Multimedia Design program at KEA, Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, I redesigned the website for Danish ceramic designer Hanne Bertelsen to better display her handmade ceramics. My goal was to create a cohesive, visually striking online presence that reflects the quality and character of her work.
In 2024, I revisited the project to sharpen the design direction and apply more advanced UX principles. Although the structure was looser, I led the entire process from analysis to final design.

Design Brief

A heuristic analysis of the original site revealed an unclear information hierarchy and weak communication of the ceramics’ craftsmanship. The layout felt cluttered, overwhelmed by sidebars, lengthy text, and small images, making navigation and engagement challenging.
User testing indicated that users struggled to locate products quickly or understand the site’s structure (with average task time around 22 seconds), which noticeably undermined the experience.
Key challenges included:
  • Improving navigation and simplifying information architecture. Another goal was to create a stronger visual hierarchy to guide users.
  • Better communicate the handmade quality and story behind the work.

The Solution

The solution was to design a new website concept with a clean, expressive presentation that feels more like a gallery experience.

The updated homepage features high-quality imagery, a bigger emphasis on showcasing the products, and a visual design guide that honors the handmade nature of the ceramics. The design emphasizes both product detail and storytelling.
